Despite hardships, these siblings find hope and support at Liceo Nueva Vida, proving that resilience and education can change lives.
Sebastián, an eighth-grader, and his sister Maite, a third-grader, live with their mother in an informal settlement, facing daily socioeconomic and personal challenges. Despite these hardships, Liceo Nueva Vida (New Life School) has been a beacon of hope in a desert of despair, providing them with the tools and opportunities they need to build a brighter future.
From Hardships to Hope
Sebastián and Maite’s mother is the unwavering pillar of their family, guiding them through immense challenges. They live in a makeshift settlement where fragile corrugated steel structures are hastily built on the dirt slopes of a mountain, leaving them vulnerable to flooding and landslides during the rainy season. Under these harsh conditions, the Rozo siblings have learned resilience and the value of hard work from a young age. They have salvaged school supplies damaged by water, endured material losses, and taken on responsibilities far beyond their years—proving their strength and determination to overcome adversity.
Strengthening Families
As the older brother, Sebastián embraces his role as a caregiver with maturity—helping Maite get to school, looking after her while their mother works, and still maintaining an exemplary commitment to his studies and family. Maite, who faces cognitive challenges, has made remarkable progress thanks to the specialized educational support at Liceo Nueva Vida, gaining both confidence and essential skills. Together, this resilient family has found the support they need to overcome adversity and grow stronger than ever.
